History of our Braided Rugs

1953 Sturbridge Yankee Workshop RugBeginnings

“To enhance the warmth of the American scene, there’s nothing quite like a fireside and a braided rug. Today the old colonial colors fill our homes with life and beauty, just as they did two centuries ago. These authentically reproduced rugs are so much in the American tradition that you can practically whiff from them the air of the salty Cape.” (1953 Catalog)

This excerpt from the first Sturbridge Yankee Workshop catalog in 1953 highlights our then braided rug collection (shown left). Sturbridge Yankee Workshop braided rugs, crafted for durability and longevity, have been a staple item in our catalog for 60 years.

Transition Through Time

In the photo below, you can see how our braided rugs have retained their style while evolving with changing decorative themes throughout the years. In the 1980’s, for instance, we saw a range of bright, bold colors, and contrasting calm pastels: the same durable braids in on-trend colors. No matter the color, our braided rugs have retained their complementary quality.
