Sturbridge, Massachusetts has a long and illustrious history. Founded in the early 1700's, settlers steadily arrived and built homes. Named for the English town of Stourbridge, it was incorporated on June 24, 1738. Sturbridge provided young soldiers for the Revolutionary War, and afterwards settled down as a farming community. However in the 19th century, harnessing water power from the Quinebaug river drove Sturbridge's early industry: cotton milling. By then, more than two hundred Sturbridge men signed up for the Civil War, leaving their homes to fight for the Union.
Since the Civil War, Sturbridge has kept as much of its early history as possible, although some early buildings and homes were destroyed by fire or were demolished. Olde Sturbridge Village opened in 1946 and has put Sturbridge in the national spotlight for being the largest outdoor historical town in New England. Sturbridge Village preserves the town's early 1790 - 1830 agrarian past and has plenty of early homes and buildings to visit.
Sturbridge Yankee Workshop's history is tied to the town's milling past. Founded in 1953 in a 150-year-old mill in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, we have been proudly furnishing homes with quality decor ever since. In 1981, we moved to our Portland, Maine location, where we continued the tradition of offering charming accents and dozens of items that are inspired by our coastal location, many of which (including Shaker furniture, buoy bells, and natural foods) are made right here in Maine.
If you're looking for classic American home furnishings like Shaker peg racks and Windsor chairs; need a wall art accent like nostalgic signs and folk art prints; have fallen in love with durable braided rugs; want to hang sweet cottage curtains; or are decorating a country kitchen, Sturbridge Yankee Workshop is a one-stop place for your decorating wishes.
Due to our long-standing commitment to excellence, Sturbridge Yankee Workshop remains a quality name in service, too. We stand by our products and take pride in the tradition of providing world-class service. Thank you for shopping with us.
